An Overview of Teeth Whitening

For the last seven years, Raphael Arwas, DDS, has led operations at Florida’s Hallandale Beach Dental. A graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, Dr. Raphael Arwas works in areas ranging from dental implants to Zoom! whitening.

Teeth can take on a yellow hue, as well as various stains, for several different reasons. These reasons can range from genetic influences to environmental behaviors. Certain foods and beverages can create yellow teeth, as can unhealthy activities like smoking tobacco products. These stains remain on a tooth’s surface for some period of time, though repeated actions and improper tooth care can allow the stains to infiltrate the enamel and actually alter the color of dentin. At this point reversing the darker, yellow nature of teeth can become a challenge.

Various whitening products and processes are available to individuals with stained dentin. Examples include special toothpastes, approved rinses and strips, and professionally administered solutions such as Philips Zoom! whitening. Each product addresses surface and dentin stains in different ways. Whitening toothpaste, for example, will likely feature cleansing silica molecules, while special brushes use rotating bristles to scrub stains out of the enamel. Individuals with yellow teeth should contact their dentist to discuss whitening options.
